Ken Schoppmeyer RIP. For those of us that were in the West Coast Blues Scene from 1967 to 2000, we were shocked during the last week of August 2010, to find out that Ken had passed away. I knew Ken, his family and was friends with him for many decades, besides jammin’ and giggin’ all over Southern California together. In 1966, Ken formed the King Biscuit Blues Band with guitarist Paul Cowie. They became a legend in the San Diego area, where they performed every weekend at the Mandolin Wind Café in the Hillcrest area. We called it “The Wind” and many blues and want to be blues musicians passed through sitting in with Ken’s band. He was always open to sharing the stage with anyone that wanted to play some blues. Kim Wilson prior to his Thunderbird era used to come by and sit in with Ken to get a few live lessons.
Ken was known as the King of the Blues Harp. An accomplished singer and a wizard on the blues harmonica, Ken was a walking encyclopedia of Who’s Who of blues. We used to trade and swap blues record albums like baseball cards. I was double saddened, as Ken called me in July, and was going to come out to Memphis and Clarksdale, and stop by to stay with me awhile to do some jams. I thought we would have one more time sharing the stage again, jammin’ some blues. The news of his death has put all his family and friends into sudden shock, and grief. I could go on and on with stories about Ken, but instead I found some links to some blues videos of him playing live in Central America on tour. Please take the time to watch and listen to this exceptional blues talent live. He was my friend, and will miss him. Mike Dollins
It might not be totally fair for me to do a review on Joe Pitts, and his new CD "Ten Shades of Blues." I was however privileged to get a journalists pre-release listen, that I had been highly anticipating of Joe's finest work to date. This month was good news - bad news for me. Losing my good blues friend Ken Schoppmeyer, who was my jammin' buddy for decades, I needed a shot in the arm. I was in the dumps. Joe was that uplifting voice in the dark. He called me up, and said, "Hey let's go up to Northwest Arkansas, and do some blues jams for the fun of it?" "Heck fire yes," was all I could say.
With a call into Ozarks Blues Society Prez, Liz Lottmann, she not only welcomed us up to NWA, but invited us to be the blues house band. On the three hour drive to Rogers, Arkansas, Joe let me listen to the new CD just off the press. Ten Shades of Blues, is an all turn key ready for worldwide blues radio broadcasting. I do have my favorites; the slow blues floats my boat, as Jimmy Lynn is remarkable on bass in this cut, like he was all through the CD. The last Acoustic Guitar and Vocal by Joe, is the real deal Delta as you can get. For the blues purest, this will go down smooth and easy like ice tea on hot sultry Arkansas delta evening.
Joe was born and raised in the Arkansas Delta. Although his blues roots are steeped deep in Arkansas Blues History, he was musically educated at Berkley School of Music. He is just at home picking a National Resonator on the front porch, as he is in complex chord and scale modes for modern fusion. His first love is blues, and the new CD goes from searing, scorching guitar sizzle, to mellow laid back heart felt slow blues. You are going to find a blues tune on this CD that ignites your imagination, as blues format is covered wide and deep.
When I moved back home to Arkansas from the West Coast six years ago, I bumped into Joe in the Guitar Center acoustic room. From there on out, we've had a few hundred miles of jammin' live on stage together. I am so excited and proud Joe has his favorite ten styles of blues down on disc for the world to hear, as it is very challenging to get what is done on stage live, in the studio and down on a recording. If you love blues guitar, this is a must have for your collection. Check out Joe's web site for details on obtaining your copy at www.joepitts.com

This was one of those days I wouldn't have minded getting locked in a Groundhog day loop, as the time went by far too fast. My head is still buzzing from it, and we had an awesome audience digging what was happening. I now call this team the Arkansas All Stars.
